Waaaaaaaaaay back in the day, before wikis and actual game leaks and official social media reveals, when a site could post some nonsense about Pikablu or Pokégods and there was no way to tell it was a hoax... my means of finding out all the cool new 'Mons were basically "surprise appearances in the anime" (you do NOT know how excited kids were when Donphan popped up in the movie) and Japanese trading cards, which you either had to buy (which was fairly easy because the whole Pokemon craze was incentive enough for shops to import them) or maybe hopefully find a "reputable" site that has all the scans -- and this was back when the internet was dial-up so you had to make a plan going in because you couldn't hold up the phone line all day!
