A loving tribute to our poor understanding of extinct life.
Guess the real identity!

I like how you fused several anteater species together; like how they speculate today that several dinosaur fossils previously classified as different species might actually be different stages of the same, yet maybe THAT's the false hypothesis

Yeah, the whole Torosaurus thing was a bit of an inspiration, although this is more of a reverse of the idea. Come to think of it, I can't seem to remember any cases where one species was split into two or more. I'm sure there are, but the only ones I can think of are basically "x-saurus was actually a baby/female x-saurus."

While I'm not sure how much merit the idea has, there's something weirdly appealing about the notion dinosaurs were getting less diverse up to the K-T Extinction. It always struck me as odd that the whole (non-bird) dinosaur tree went out in an instant while mammals and birds and a bunch of others survived; if dinosaurs were already on the decline then it feels like it makes a bit more sense. Granted there are so many other factors...

On another note, it would be strange to think of these hypothetical future paleontologists may eventually correct their mistake with the Visceravore and properly divide it up into several species, and then conclude the rash of Holocene extinctions "weren't so bad" since there were a few more species than they originally thought.

Forgive the ramble.

Hah love the inclusion of the bovid (bison?). The shrink-wrapped state immediately had me suspecting this was commentary on paleoart. Well done!

I love how you've executed the drawings of these 'speculative' creatures - very very similar to how many dinosaurs are drawn. No body fat, and over-exposure of bony nodules (that in this case are most definitely anchors for more connective tissue and musculature than rendered in the images). That is extremely clever, and a very nice, subtle nod to paleoart's follies. : D Three cheers all around!

Tamandua? Yes and no. The young tree climbing stage is based upon tamanduas, while the adult grounded stage is based upon the giant anteaters. An intentional "error" inspired by how we sometimes mistaken different species for stages of just one type of animal, and vice versa.
